WINES FOR THANKSGIVING MEALS

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of the year when Nature’s Bounty is celebrated and shared with family and friends. Traditions abound, and the variety of food on the table is overwhelming making it (and Christmas Dinners) one of the most challenging when it comes to pairing with wines.

Here are a few suggestions that we know will make your meal extra special and can be enjoyed with all those delicious dishes you’ve lovingly prepared.

ROSE WINE

Rose Wines are not just for summer sipping!  In fact, a good fruity, balanced Rose wine can be a perfect choice for Turkey or Ham and all the trimmings. Look for something dry to off dry, with good acidity and fruit balance.

Our Picks

-Spier Signature Pinot Noir & Chardonnay Rose (South Africa) $15.99

-Domaine de Noblaie Chinon Cabernet Franc (Loire Valley) $21.99

WHITE WINE

Serving white wine with your Thanksgiving meal, is very traditional.  To ensure a good balance with the meal, choose a white wine that works with all the different vegetables and accompaniments, like cranberry sauce and gravy too.  Stay away from overly acidic wines like Sauvignon Blanc for example.  It will compete with the rich flavours of your dinner.  Instead, we recommend a light and well balanced off dry Riesling or a slightly more robust Chenin Blanc.  Chardonnay can work well, if it’s not too oaky, and Pinot Gris, like Riesling, is a good go-to.

Our Picks

                          -Care Unoaked Chardonnay (Spain) $17.99

-Quail’s Gate Chenin Blanc (Okanagan) $23.99

RED WINE

Don’t hesitate to serve a good red wine.  Just stay away from big, powerful Cabernet Sauvignons or robust, high alcohol Shiraz.  These bold wines will compete with the food.  Choose a medium bodied fruit forward Pinot Noir, a Beaujolais or a Rhone style blend like Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre or Chateau Neuf du Pape style wine.  The blended wines offer a complexity in the wines that will work with the complexity in the variety of foods you are enjoying without competing.  Another favourite, is a Canadian wine from Henry of Pelham in Ontario – The Baco Noir which is stunning with the meal.

Our Picks

-Henry of Pelham Baco Noir (Ontario) $21.99

             - Louis Jadot Beaujolais Cru (Beaujolais) $34.99

ENJOY YOUR BOUNTY & BE GRATEFUL FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.  HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
